USDT perpetual futures are derivative contracts that track a cryptocurrency price, settle profit and loss in a stablecoin and have no fixed expiration date. They make directional exposure and leverage easy to access, which also makes them a major source of forced liquidations during volatile moves.
How a perpetual contract works
A trader can open a long position to benefit from a rise or a short position to benefit from a decline without owning the underlying asset. The contract remains open until the trader closes it, the exchange liquidates it or risk controls reduce it. Profit and loss are usually calculated in USDT for linear contracts.
Because there is no expiry, exchanges use a funding mechanism to keep the perpetual price near the spot index. At scheduled intervals, one side pays the other depending on the relationship between the contract and its reference. Funding is not a guaranteed directional signal; it is a balancing payment that can also reveal crowded positioning.
Margin and leverage
Initial margin is the collateral required to open a position. Maintenance margin is the minimum equity required to keep it open. Leverage allows a larger notional position with less collateral, but it also reduces the distance between entry and liquidation. A small adverse move can therefore produce a full forced closure.
Cross margin can share collateral across positions, while isolated margin limits collateral to one position. Exact rules, fees and maintenance tiers vary by exchange. This is why a public heatmap cannot know the precise liquidation price of every account.
What liquidation means
When account equity falls below the required maintenance level, the exchange's risk engine can close the position. A long liquidation generally creates selling pressure; a short liquidation generally creates buying pressure. Multiple closures near one another can form a cascade in which forced orders move price into additional vulnerable positions.
Real events and estimated pools
Exchange-reported liquidations confirm forced closures that happened. Estimated pools model where similar pressure may be concentrated using market data and leverage assumptions. The model is valuable for scenario planning, but it is not private account data and cannot guarantee an exact level or amount.
Why open interest and funding matter
Open interest measures outstanding contracts and helps show whether leverage is expanding or contracting. Funding can indicate which side is paying to maintain exposure. Extreme funding with rapidly rising open interest can describe crowded conditions, but price structure and flow are still needed to determine whether the crowd is vulnerable.
Risk controls
Define maximum loss before selecting leverage. Account for fees, funding and slippage. Avoid using liquidation as a stop, because execution during a cascade can be worse than the displayed trigger. Use smaller positions in thin markets and understand the contract specification before comparing quantities across exchanges.
Perpetual futures are useful instruments for hedging and directional trading, but their structure turns leverage into market pressure when volatility expands. A liquidation map helps visualize that pressure only when confirmed events and estimated zones remain clearly separated.
