Open interest is the total number or value of derivative contracts that remain open. Unlike traded volume, which counts activity during a period, open interest describes outstanding exposure. It helps determine whether leverage is entering or leaving the market, but it cannot identify long and short direction on its own.
Open interest versus volume
Every futures contract has a long and a short side, so rising open interest means new contracts are being created, not that the market is becoming net long. Falling open interest means contracts are being closed. Volume can be high while open interest barely changes if positions are transferred or rapidly opened and closed.
Four common price combinations
Price and open interest rising together often indicate expanding participation. Price rising while open interest falls can reflect short covering or broad position reduction. Price falling with rising open interest shows new exposure entering during weakness. Price and open interest falling together can indicate long deleveraging.
These combinations are starting points. Funding, taker flow, spot activity and market structure are needed to avoid simplistic conclusions. For example, rising price and open interest below resistance can describe breakout preparation or crowded late longs depending on how orders are absorbed.
Open interest near liquidation pools
An estimated pool represents potential sensitivity. If open interest falls before price reaches it, part of the exposure may have closed and the zone can lose relevance. If open interest expands as price approaches, fragility may be increasing. Confirmed liquidations then show whether the exposure is actually being forced out.
During a short squeeze, price can rise while open interest declines and short liquidations print. That means fuel is being consumed. During a fresh leveraged advance, price and open interest may rise together before any large liquidation event. The risk profile of those two moves is different even when the candles look similar.
Compare exchanges carefully
Open interest values depend on contract specifications and quote conventions. Aggregate numbers should be normalized before comparing Binance, Bybit and Gate. A change concentrated on one venue may be local, while synchronized expansion across several exchanges points to broader leverage entering the market.
Practical workflow
Record the direction and rate of open-interest change, not only the absolute number. Place it beside price structure, volume and taker effectiveness. Mark nearby estimated zones and observe whether open interest builds, contracts or stays flat during the approach. When real liquidations occur, check whether exposure remains elevated afterward.
Frequent errors
Do not assume rising open interest is bullish. Do not compare unnormalized values across contracts. Avoid using one snapshot without a baseline, and do not treat open interest as an entry signal. It is a context variable that describes participation and potential fragility.
Used correctly, open interest helps answer a more useful question than whether price is up or down: is the move adding leveraged exposure, removing it, or transferring it? That answer improves the way liquidity maps and liquidation events are interpreted.
